| Too many to enumerate at this time, I would leave someone out but I do remember you Ben. |
This painting was laying on the coffee table in Don's Waipahu apartment around Nov or Dec of 1967. Making his farewells before discharge, Ben Ciriacks asked for and received it as a memento of the great times he, Don, Jim Cuckler, Jim von Bergen, Charlie Bantle and various others had in Hawaii and Alaska during 1966 and 1967. |

| Last 'Blue Goose' night in Adak. Six day war in
Israel noted each morning VIA THE HEADLINES on the newspapers in the vending
boxes at the hangar entrance as our Squadron took that long to come back to
Barber's Point from our Adak deployment in June 1967. [ Didn't have time to actually read those papers what for:
I supervised the spaces on the administrative, 2nd floor of the hanger - someone else supervised the similar activity (and care/unloading of incoming/outgoing planes) taking place on the ground floor in the hanger bays and maintenance spaces. ] |
Upon arrival, as a former CTI2 (Communications Technician Crypto-Linguist), many fellow squadron members greeted me with suspicion. After several encounters where I disciplined uncovered subordinates on their way to the chow hall, trespassing through the E-5 barracks or 'grab a$$ing' in general, many held me in low regard if not contempt. Higher ranking personnel really got pissed off at me when their attempts to 'pull rank' to get paperwork processed 'ahead of the line' through the Personnel Office failed - I knew Navy Regs allowed me to disobey an unlawful order, especially those having only to do with purely personal instead of military matters. (One person in the 'old' personnel office was actually 'selling' faster service to those subject to his duties.)
But, after reorganizing the office (with the very detailed, written job descriptions that had previously not existed) to the point where 'pulling rank' was no longer necessary and using my fantastic memory (at the time) to review every single personnel file to make sure everyone received every medal they deserved and had every 'required' entry made to their file and after our Personnel Office received higher marks than in previous inspections and our squadron won the Navy Efficiency Award, TWICE, and a new Personnel Officer and his assistant (Lts. Jordan & Hart) came aboard my esteem (both self- and other-) within the squadron increased.
In fact, after 18 months of duty in the squadron and by the time we returned from Adak to Hawaii, I was held in high enough esteem to be among the first to return to take control of our spaces, process the TDY paperwork for each returning flight, supervise and establish the duty crews and watches for those already having reported for duty with VP-22 and awaiting our return at Barber's Point. That was a fantastic leadership opportunity for a 24 year old who had not graduated from high school. My entire tour with VP-22 was a fantastic character building, leadership and growth opportunity - one which I will never forget. [ My first stay in Hawaii in 1955 at age 12 was another character building experience. ]
Nov 1965 - Ben in Milwaukee (with nephews Pat & Tom) just before reporting for duty with VP-22 in Hawaii.

Aug 2001 - Ben and fellow alumni at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center after the College of Artesia reunion in Albuquerque, New Mexico. (Ben was the first Business Manager of the IPCC while it was being built and through the Grand Opening in September 1976.) |
