Watching those trucks unload all that cold weather gear at the hangar in Barbers Point and wondering why we needed that stuff if we were deploying to Iwakuni, Japan.  Surprise!! here we come Adak :<(
COMMENTS:  Great to see this web site.  So many good times to remember,so many tough times to laugh about.  I was sad to see that the Navy decommissioned our old squadron.  An outfit with the history that VP-22 had and all the awards we won, well it just didn't seem right.  Even if the squadron is gone, It will live on in all our memories. What we did then,what we were a part of in those days of our youth will never perish as long as one of us is still around.  Shipmates then-- shipmates now--shipmates forever.

Too many to enumerate at this time, I would leave someone out but I do remember you Ben.
COMMENTS: I served in VP-22 as a ground-pounder both IMA and AT shop, and flight Crew 2 and 1 with Bob Cole, John T Scott, Walt Joslin, Bert Herrera, Sid Hanisee and John Cadorette as the enlisted crew.  Cdr Barron was the PPC and Lcdr Hafford was the Tacco.  Does anyone know where Jim Von Bergen got to.  I retired from the Navy in 1991 as an AVCM.

1967-Waipahu, Hawaii - Freehand painting by Don Bentley
This painting was laying on the coffee table in Don's Waipahu apartment around Nov or Dec of 1967.  Making his farewells before discharge, Ben Ciriacks asked for and received it as a memento of the great times he, Don, Jim Cuckler, Jim von Bergen, Charlie Bantle and various others had in Hawaii and Alaska during 1966 and 1967.

This is a version of originally scanned image tweaked by the really good (and FREE) graphics program, Irfanview.  The original painting and a ledger book are the only things Ben has left of the tour with VP-22 in Hawaii and Alaska.

COMMENTS:  Sir,
My father was associated with patron22 through his membership in patron14 as well as barronpac.  He was assigned to 14 at barber's point in the late 50's and flew the barrier from midway to adak.  If any patron 22 men remember Jim Rundell from VW 14 in Hawaii please E-Mail me as I have news to pass on.

4 May 2001:  Ben, I appreciate you assisting me.  The person that you mention with red hair was my mom. dad was usually assigned to fly with Crew 8 of vw14.  Please stay in touch, and once again, thanks.

I'm the webmaster who created it.
Last 'Blue Goose' night in Adak.  Six day war in Israel noted each morning VIA THE HEADLINES on the newspapers in the vending boxes at the hangar entrance as our Squadron took that long to come back to Barber's Point from our Adak deployment in June 1967.  [ Didn't have time to actually read those papers what for:
  • all the scrounging for good equipment from the departing squadron before the other two remaining squadrons claimed it;
  • gathering and temporarily assigning the new/awaiting personnel to work details (see next);
  • supervising the moving of 'gathered' equipment into each department's spaces (the same ones we had before we left); and
  • really heavy drinking each night in order to get to relax enough to get some sleep before the next day's round of extreme activity.
      I supervised the spaces on the administrative, 2nd floor of the hanger - someone else supervised the similar activity (and care/unloading of incoming/outgoing planes) taking place on the ground floor in the hanger bays and maintenance spaces. ]
  • COMMENTS:  I came on board immediately after the squadron returned from six months deployment in the Philippines (I'd been stationed in San Miguel up north of Subic Bay during 1963 & 1964 and had visited Sangley Point once while on liberty) - to a Personnel Office that had yet to process new personnel who had reported for duty during the previous three months.  In the process of learning the duties of a PN2, I read all the manuals and networked with other personnelmen to write 'very detailed' job descriptions while mastering each function within the office.  (After mastering each job, I turned it over to another personnelman - those job descriptions minimized the supervision time needed thereafter and allowed me to concentrate on learning the latest, new job and associated job description being tackled.)  Getting a malfunctioning ditto machine operating (before the advent of photocopiers) vastly increased our productivity and efficiency - using color coding (pink for newbies & yellow for departees) let everyone else on base know they were dealing with someone from VP-22, eventually to become the BEST SQUADRON (of the four VP squadrons) at Barber's Point.

    Upon arrival, as a former CTI2 (Communications Technician Crypto-Linguist), many fellow squadron members greeted me with suspicion.  After several encounters where I disciplined uncovered subordinates on their way to the chow hall, trespassing through the E-5 barracks or 'grab a$$ing' in general, many held me in low regard if not contempt.  Higher ranking personnel really got pissed off at me when their attempts to 'pull rank' to get paperwork processed 'ahead of the line' through the Personnel Office failed - I knew Navy Regs allowed me to disobey an unlawful order, especially those having only to do with purely personal instead of military matters.  (One person in the 'old' personnel office was actually 'selling' faster service to those subject to his duties.)

    But, after reorganizing the office (with the very detailed, written job descriptions that had previously not existed) to the point where 'pulling rank' was no longer necessary and using my fantastic memory (at the time) to review every single personnel file to make sure everyone received every medal they deserved and had every 'required' entry made to their file and after our Personnel Office received higher marks than in previous inspections and our squadron won the Navy Efficiency Award, TWICE, and a new Personnel Officer and his assistant (Lts. Jordan & Hart) came aboard my esteem (both self- and other-) within the squadron increased.

    In fact, after 18 months of duty in the squadron and by the time we returned from Adak to Hawaii, I was held in high enough esteem to be among the first to return to take control of our spaces, process the TDY paperwork for each returning flight, supervise and establish the duty crews and watches for those already having reported for duty with VP-22 and awaiting our return at Barber's Point.  That was a fantastic leadership opportunity for a 24 year old who had not graduated from high school.  My entire tour with VP-22 was a fantastic character building, leadership and growth opportunity - one which I will never forget.  [ My first stay in Hawaii in 1955 at age 12 was another character building experience. ]
